The Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) is an especially fascinating tree – she is a living fossil, first appearing in the Early Jurassic period, and currently only grows under human cultivation – though two small populations of semi-wild specimens have been found in the Zhejiang province of China – but high genetic uniformity suggests they were originally planted and cared for by humans.

She is incredibly resilient and tenacious. Six trees growing within 2 kilometers of the 1945 atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima, Japan, were among the few living things able to survive the blast.
